A trio of powerhouses from the Bavaria Military Community made their presence felt in last weekend’s German Strongman and Strongwoman competition in the northern German town of Arendsee.

The three – Matthias Martin, Aryn Lockhart and Holli Van Camp – were among 27 competitors in the contest. Van Camp, an employee at Edelweiss Lodge and Resort, finished third overall in the women’s standings. Lockhart, a Department of Defense civilian at the George C. Marshall Center for Security Studies, placed eighth among women. Lockhart’s husband, Martin, ranked 16th in the male competition.

The contest, sponsored by the German Federation of Strength Athletes, included four events meant to test a variety of techniques and muscle groups, including a keg toss, tire flip, log press and frame deadlift.

Making her debut appearance in a strongwoman competition, Van Camp emerged as the event’s breakout star. She completed the keg toss – three kegs weighing 22 pounds each and another at 26 pounds, thrown to a height of almost 10 feet – in 23.8 seconds; flipped a 350-pound tire six times in 24.64 seconds; converted 21 overhead lifts of an 88-pound log; and rounded out her impressive performance with a  396-pound  frame deadlift.

“This was an amazing competition,” Van Camp stated in a press release provided by Lockhart. “I’ve never competed in a strongwoman competition and it’s a very relaxed atmosphere. Everyone is out here to have a great time and move a lot of weight. All of the athletes are amazingly supportive of one another.”

Martin, a 17-year strongman veteran, was happy to add a new contender to the scene.

“We’re always hoping to find more competitors to welcome into this unique world,” Martin said in the press release. “There really is nothing like it.”
