Berlin (dpa) – The Bavarian government came under fire on Tuesday
after announcing plans to open so-called “deportation camps” for
economic migrants mainly from the Balkans whose asylum requests are
likely to be denied.

Bavarian Premier Horst Seehofer, who also heads the conservative
Christian Social Union (CSU), said over the weekend that two camps
would be built near the Austrian border to accommodate migrants from
countries classified as safe and therefore likely to be deported.

Seehofer argues that grouping economic migrants mainly from Albania,
Kosovo and Montenegro together would be an efficient way of bundling
asylum requests and expediting deportation.

The Social Democrats and opposition parties accused Seehofer of
trying to score political points and stoking anti-immigrant sentiment
as right-wing assaults on migrants and their accommodation are rising
rapidly across the country.

“Mr Seehofer should be aware that the harassment of refugees is not
something that will be condoned under a coalition with the SPD,” said
Ralf Stegner, the deputy head of the party, pointing to the danger of
Seehofer‘s “inflammatory rhetoric.”

“The CSU is not concerned with finding a political solution to the
rising numbers of refugees, it is running a targeted campaign against
migrants seeking refuge in the wealthy state of Bavaria,” said
Margarete Bause, a member of the opposition Greens.

Immigration is a contentious topic in Germany, where an unprecedented
influx of asylum seekers has placed a strain on public services.
About 400,000 people are expected to apply for asylum in the country
this year.
