Archaeologists unearth centuries-old pretzels in Bavaria

She explained some of the history of the popular baked good: “The form of the pretzel is supposed to represent the crossed arms of monks. Eventually it ended up as a fasting meal.”

Joachim Wolbergs, the mayor of Regensburg, described the discovery as “extraordinary” to the website, “because it depicts a snippet of everyday life”.
