Adolf Hitler’s Mountain Retreat in Bavaria, Getting $17-million Euro Makeover

Adolf Hitler’s famed Bavarian mountain retreat is reportedly getting a makeover, according to the Bavarian government, with a set renovation project that will cost $17 million euro to begin in 2015.

The project will enlarge the historical information centre that currently stands there. The centre, which is currently 11,000 square feet, will be expanded by approximately 27,000 square feet, and will be completed by 2018.

The information centre offers details on Obersalzberg in the Bavarian Alps – the mountain ridge where Hitler had his Berghof home, Eagle’s Nest mountain retreat, and Nazi headquarters, as well as general information on the dark period in history when the Nazis ruled.

High-ranking officials Herman Goering, Albert Speer and Martin Bormann also reportedly kept homes in the area.

Hitler’s Berghof home in Obersalzberg is where he spent reportedly more time than anywhere else during World War II. It was also the most infamous Nazi headquarters of the era, following the headquarters in Berlin. The residence was damaged by British aerial bombs in 1945, and demolished by the Bavarian government in 1952.
