To find more German-made Christmas ornaments than there are in Laura Rombauer’s Napa Valley Vintage Home store, you might have to go to the Bavarian Black Forest.
Stocking thousands of German ornaments seems to have been a good idea for Rombauer. The store, located at 1201 Main St. in St. Helena, has had a remarkably consistent customer response during the 10 years Rombauer has been in business, she said.
“Christmas has always been a big category here at the store,” Rombauer said. “‘Seasonal holidays’ is my No. 1 [sales] category. It is our biggest department on an annual basis. Christmas is a very significant contributor.”
How many items has the store sold in Rombauer’s decade of ownership?
“Oh, my gosh!” Rombauer exclaims. “Thousands, tens of thousands.”
It’s doubtful that any store on Main Street gets quite so ramped up for Christmas as does Vintage Home under Rombauer’s leadership. At the outset of the season she shuts down for three days, which allows her crew of decorators an uninterrupted working environment.
“I’ve always made a production of it,” Rombauer said.
There are four Christmas trees inside the store, including the giant 12-footer that can be seen from the street and which is decorated by one woman; a German silver tree that Laura decorates herself; a woodlands tree with a variety of small wood-carved forest animals clinging to its branches; and a children’s tree in the back of the store.
Rombauer is optimistic about her business this holiday season.
“I noticed a few stores holding back on seasonal merchandise — concerned, I guess, that they’ll get stuck with all this stuff,” she said. “But I’ve always had a lot of confidence. We have a lot of customer loyalty — people who come back year after year knowing we have an abundant holiday section. So I try to stick to my guns and buy as much seasonal stuff as I can.
“I have never quit and we’ve never slowed down,” she added, “and it’s been rewarded.”
